Friday. After our usual leisurely morning, we needed to take some recyclables to the bins and do a little shopping at the Super U. Although it had rained earlier, when we set out walking it was dry and not too cold. It is such a beautiful walk up the tree lined street that we really enjoy it. It felt good to get rid of so much recycling too!
We had a pretty long list of groceries to buy and we love looking around the Super U so we were there over an hour! We try not to buy too many heavy things because it is about an hour walk round trip, but we managed to buy enough to fill two backpacks and three large shopping bags! Every time we shop there we find interesting things to try so we always buy a new kind of cracker or cookie. Or chocolate candy bar. Or ice cream. No, really, we did buy some "real" food!!!
It was a quiet afternoon. David read the paper and I watched a movie on Netflix. Around 6:30 we decided to walk over to Aux Cepages for a glass of wine. It's kind of sad that we can't sit outside in the evening anymore because it's getting too cool. The inside of the bar is very nice, tho, so it's OK.
They were pretty busy and more and more people recognize us now and try to talk to us. There is a man we see there frequently who always wears a beret and he talked to us for the first time. He speaks a little English. He has visited the United States and told us he has family in Seattle! Very nice man. He showed us an original print from World War I about the French Army that he purchased in the village for five euros.
About that time Douglas walks in. Douglas is a British man married to a French woman named Claire. They are very good friends of our homeowner, Rachael. We met Douglas very briefly the first night we arrived and we hadn't seen him since. He remembered us and we invited him to sit down and have some wine with us. He is a VERY nice man and hugely funny!!! He told us Claire was listening to something on the radio and would be over later. We asked why we hadn't seen him around and he explained that Claire is still working and they had been back and forth to Paris a few times recently.
Claire soon joined us and she is a wonderful woman. Just as friendly and funny as Douglas. We bought each other so many glasses of wine that at the end of the evening we just split the bill! We had a ball talking to them. Before the night was over they had offered to let us stay in their Paris apartment (!) but we have already reserved and paid for our hotel for the end of our trip before we fly home. They also invited us over to their home for dinner on Monday night. How nice is that! Very generous people. We asked what to bring and Douglas assigned us cheese -- I think I can handle that with the incredible selection at the cheese store right down the street! We will go there Monday at 7:30 p.m. I will report on how much fun we have next Tuesday!!!
We got home later than usual and just had white beans with barbecue sauce and bread and butter for dinner. Not our best meal . . . but not our worst either! We stayed up until around 11:30 -- pretty late for us old folks!!!
